Best Director Chances, check this out...

Ok, so I heard this rumor about the Academy Award for Best Director and how to predict it pretty closely in comparison to the Best Director awarded by the Director's Guild of America. I heard that when a Director is given the award by the Directors Guild they are going to win the Academy Award as well. So I checked the past award winners for both the Academy Awards and the Directors Guild of America.

Here is what I found:

Since the Director's Guild of America started giving awards away in 1948, this is the 56th year of the awards. I looked back over the past 55 years the awards were given out by both groups. What I found was this.

The award has been given 55 times, and 49 times it was given to the same director in both the Academy Awards and the Directors Guild of America. So with that being said, only 6 times the two awards have been different over the past 55 years. Pretty good odds there!

This, the 56th year, the nominees for the Directors Guild of America are:

SOFIA COPPOLA - LOST IN TRANSLATION
CLINT EASTWOOD - MYSTIC RIVER
PETER JACKSON - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
GARY ROSS - SEABISCUIT
PETER WEIR - MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

The Directors Guild Awards are given on Saturday, February 7, 2004.

So if Peter Jackson ends up winning the Directors Guild Award next month, then there is a pretty damn good chance he will win the Academy Award as well

P.S. The DGA website is here: http://www.dga.org/

And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

Very interesting.

1)Are Director's Guild awards broadcast?

2)As an idle thought, I wonder if places like U. K. betting parlors give odds on academy awards, and what are track records in predicting are.

I am not sure to be quite honest. It should say on the website though if there is a broadcast. I don't think it is, as it is basically like a union for Directors, such as the Screen Actors Guild is the union for actors. I am sure the outcome will be on the front page of the website though the following day

That is quite interesting. How did you stumble upon it to begin with? I mean what gave you the idea?

I was talking with my mother a few weeks ago, and she mentioned to me that she read something about the connection between the two. So from there I went to each website and checked it out for myself and the rumor was correct

The chances for Peter Jackson and RotK to win the big Oscars just got greater. Yesterday Jackson won the DGA Award, that I spoke of in this thread and you can see that there is like a 90% chance he will win the Oscar now, considering his win at the DGA award yesterday.

Jackson wins DGA Award for Feature Film

Things look very good for PJ's Oscar chances.

Still, it was just last year that Rob Marshall won the DGA for "Chicago" but Roman Polanski won the Best Director Oscar in an upset for "The Pianist."

This year, Clint Eastwood of "Mystic River" and Sofia Coppola of "Lost in Translation" are PJ's only serious competition. They are still extreme longshots. I think Peter Weir of "Master and Commander" and Fernando Meirelles of "City of God" should just be happy to be nominated. Still, you never know about Meirelles - his nomination was a huge shock, and obviously there must be some support for him.

I didn't see Lost in Translation yet, so I can't comment on that, but I agree about Mystic River. I knew before the nominations that would be the biggest competition, even when people said Cold Mountain would be. I knew Cold Mountain wouldn't even get a nomination, because frankly the movie sucked big time

PJ does have the odds in his favor, but it's still not a given, but according to all the statistics out there, he sits nicely. We will see in 3 weeks...

Agreed it was great; better directed (IMO) than ROTK. Not so great is that the co-director, Katia Lund appears to have been written out of the script. Odd.

*nods* Definitely. If RoTK wins over any of those two, I will personally move to LA and hunt them down like the rabbits they are, and [censored as per entmoot policy]. Yep, that's what I'll do.

*Snort* Promise to strap on a web cam while you're at it? You might be up for next year's Best Slasher Flick

I've not seen Mystic River, but IMO Lost in Translation is better directed too. However, I reckon it's unlikely that a newbie (Coppola) will win. Eastwood might be considered "due", so he's probably the only realistic competition.

Still, as someone said on another thread, Jackson may well get it on the basis of having done it at all. Which kind of defeats the purpose of having specialist categories but hey ho

We all know the AA are all about politics anyway. The word I've heard is that PJ will win as a reward for the entire trilogy, rather than the ROTK in particular. I really enjoyed all three films, but personally, I think FOTR was the best one.
