I see you like Frank McCourt (Teacher Man, Tis, Angela's Ashes?). The only reason I know that is because I had an amazing high school english teacher. I've not read any of his stuff, though I've wanted to.

I would recommend Lord Of Light by Roger Zelazny. It's an older story, but out again in a reprint for a new generation. I just reread it, and it still works.

I recommend Conn Iggulden's Conqueror-series, which is about Ghengis Khan.

The Time Traveller's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger (I think). Quite an unusual idea, and despite the title it took me til near the end to realise that it was in fact the wife that was the main character (you'll see what I mean), and if little bits of it don't tug at your heartstrings then you're already dead.

Neil Gaiman. Everything is good in its own way.

The Graveyard Book is his newest. I think it's marketed for that 11-14 tweener age but my daughter and I (ages 8 and 40) found it wonderful in equal measure.

For a strictly grown up work, you can't go wrong with American Gods.

And for a great bit of fun, go with my favorite: Neverwhere.
