Hmmm...that's a vrey good question. Some food for thought. Though I don't think Albus had anything to do with it the minestrey probably pressured him into it.

Maybe he, Crabbe, and Goyle are the only Slytherin male fifth years.

Maybe Lucius pressured the school into it, since he's done stuff like that before.

i don't get it either. the teachers must know that he's just a little stuck up brat that hates Harry and mudbloods and all that crap...and if they made him a prefect that would only make things worse for everyone. but, then again...they made Lupin a prefect, and he was a trouble maker- not a stuck up rich kid, but a troublemaker nontheless. maybe they thought that malfoys' newfound sense of authority would straighten him and his friends out? ooooor maybe i'm just babbling and need to shut up....savvy?

Now that I think about it, I think I remember them firing Lucius from the school board or whatever, so I doubt it was him. Maybe Dumbledore just has his reasons....

Lucius probably forced Dumbledore to give Malfoy the job. After all, spoiled cruel brats don't often get picked worthy of the title Prefect out of deeds, do they?

Alright, well, here's a thought, who would you rather have as the Slytherin Prefect:
A. Crabbe (so he could punish you for not giving him your desert) B. Goyle (So he could punish you for not giving him your desert, and force you into to doing his homework) C. Draco (So he can punish you for being friends with Potter, hey atleast he's not a stupid git. He knows how to deal. ) |

Actually, I'd rather there were no Slytherin prefects, just Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff.

Yes, I do agree that Malfoy is a little twit, but when you think about it- he is the ideal Slytherin.
pure blood, ambitious, etc.

Yep.
That's what I think! Perfect slytherin and they pick the ideal people of each house. Not just the hard working nice people! |

I agree with Elvellyn and Valaróma. Each house would have its own prefects to represent its best. And really...do we know of any nice people in Slytherin? Or even very many characters from Slytherin? Who else could Rowling have chosen for the Slytherin prefect? Draco is the "perfect" prefect for that house.

Malfoy is certainly more intelligent than his cronies. I'll bet he gets better marks. Thus, a Prefect is born.
