Going downhill...

Okay, here's a question... why does, after Pippin tells Treebeard to take them South, Treebeard say 'I always like going South. Somehow, it always feels like going downhill' I know it's not in the book because I just re-read it. Does anybody know why he says this?

I think it's because in deviating from the book's storyline and having to convince Treebeard to go in a new direction from where he was headed in the movie, they had to make up some line for him to say that they thought sounded like something Treebeard would say. I dunno. It always gets a laugh.

I thought they just added that bit to sound funny or something.

I think it's because he's so big and tree-like, and to a tree, which grows out of the ground, going toward the south pole would feel like walking down a hill.
Did that make any sense?

Well, no. He wasn't a tree. I think when he says "going south is like waking downhill" He means that south is down. Like a map, and the direction.

My first thought was that because of the way the mountains are related to Fangorn, he could actually be going slightly downhill, but I'll have to take a look at a map to double-check that.

Yeah, but when going South, it doesn't always mean that you are going downhill. Maybe it was just supposed to be a funny line, like Shadowfax and Huan said.

He doesn't say "I'm going down" he says "Feels like going down", probably because south on a map is down. But yeah, it's probably just a funny line.
