Arwen Undomiel Book order

OK, this topic spans several forums so I stuck it here.

My friend told me that her cousin told her that she should read the books in this order: Sil, Hobbit, & LOTR. He said that's the order Tolkien intended for them to go in. Is he right? I always thought you should read the Sil after LOTR.

The Silmarillion is the prequel to the Lord of the Rings and should have been published first, but that doesn't mean you have to read it first. The Sil was published second and when it was published, it was not published as it should have been (for it could not be as it was meant to be, it's author having passed away). I think it would be too difficult to start The Silmarillion first. The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings are the best introduction to Tolkien's world, in my opinion.

The Hobbit,
The Two Towers,
The Return of the King,
The Fellowship of the Ring,
The Sil,
The Unfinished Tales.

Dont ask, I'm weird! I just read a bit of the Two towers after the movie and really got into it so after finishing that I am now reaidng the Fellowship!

I read the Hobbit, then LOTR, and amnow on ROTK. I plan to read the Sil afterwards. Or maybe reread the Hobbit, or read the Redwall series. I dunno.

-LotR (in order!)
um, that's all I've read so far, but here's my plan:
-Silmarillion
-Unfinished Tales
-Hobbit
-hoME
-Letters

But it really depends on the library...I think a lot of people read Hobbit first, and that does make sense. I started Hobbit, but then I skipped to FotR 'cause I got bored. yes, I'm wierd.

The Hobbit
LotR
The Sil
Various HoMe

That's the proper order. At least, it makes sense . . . the Sil's too hard to read until you're really interested.

Reading hobbit first makes sense. I read the hobbit after lotr and sil and the writing was harder to enjoy.

I got a boxed set of The Hobbit and LotR in that order, so I guess that's the way I read it (I really don't remember; I was about 7) then I read the Sil, and now I'm reading UT and Lays of Beleriand (HoME #3) in bits and peices.

I've only read The Hobbit, LOTR, and The Silmarillion so far, but I'm planning to read Unfinished Tales and HoME as soon as I can.

i am being considered somewhat of a Tolkien expert at my school, although there are others more learned in the works of the great Prof. T. (namely my best friend's older brother) but they prefer to worship in silence. i do not feel that i deserve that title, especially as the last time i completely read the LotR was in 4th grade, and i have not completely read the Sil (although i have studied the genealogies in great detail).

Haven't noticed that, but is it just me or does everyone leave a forum when I come in? Us and are paranoia (and my grammar, sheesh).

Btw, I think my parents read the Hobbit/LotR to me before I read it on my own, so I really have no idea what order I was exposed to them in first.

note: 'are' paranoia? I MUST be tierd.

Anytime one of my friends has a question about LotR, they usually come to me and another of my friends, another EIDRIORCQWSDAKLMEDDCWWTIWOATTOPWFIO. But I'm no where near being an expert. Better go study. . .

Eruviel, just so you know (in case you don't), few people read all the HoMe books. Although I have most of them, I've only skimmed through most of the "most" I have. There's really only three books I read cover to cover (the last three). Also, you can very safely read Letters before HoMe. I believe The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien was published first.

Thanks for the advice, Nolendil. I want to try and read all of the hoME, but I don't know that I actually will. Probably not, but I can plan on it!
