Ready to Watch Again?

I feel like watching the LOTR movies again soon. Does anyone else? I watched them about a year ago with my oldest son - after he had read the books. I hadn't seen them in a pretty long time before that. I'm itching to see them again sometime soon... I think.

Some locals here have talked about either a movie marathon, or maybe going three consecutive weekends (maybe Sunday nights) in the near future to get through them all. I'm liking the idea.

I'm also about ready for a re-read of the books.

Hm, LoTR are the sort of movies I always end up watching if they're on TV, but that I never pick up on my own and say: "Let's see that again, it's been a while."

I have nearly finished a re-read of the books - I've got as far as to Many Partings

I think I would be ready to watch the movies again, if I felt I could spare three hours (times three) ...

I only watch Extended Editions anymore... so it's practically got to be three times four!

I used to have yearly marathons (3 extended films on the same day). But that requires stamina, so the past couple of years me and my fellow LotR friend have narrowed it down to one film every December.

We watched The Two Towers a couple of weeks ago. We might break away from our habit though and see the third film this month already, instead of waiting till the end of the year.

One film every December! Are you trying to replicate the release schedule?

I watch all three every June. I am a school teacher, and when we get out for summer vacation I watch the Hobbit animated movie and the LOTR movies. I also watch all of the Star Wars, Matrix, and Bourne movies. I also take lots of naps. Peace and goodwill.

A tragedy has occurred! I have lost the first disc to my copy of the extended version of the Fellowship!

When I think about it and try to look for it and then I don't find it, I feel like dying. But then I realize it's just a movie and get over it until next time I feel the loss of it in my soul.

If this were around the time when the movies were new and I was deeply addicted, I probably would never have gotten over it.

That was the intention, actually

(or maybe you weren't that addicted even then )

I've been wanting to watch them again, too, but it's hard to block out that much time. I read the books again last year; can't remember how many times I've read them.

Yes, in fact! I've been watching them recently with my father and he's getting right into them! He has never read the books, but i'm working on him about that.

Indeed, i am, too!

I've spent so much time in the Second Age in the last few years that i've nearly forgotten how wonderful the late Third Age can be!

If you have Sauron Defeated or the abridged version, End of the Third Age (doesn’t include the Downfall of Númenor material), read the “Epilogue”, too – sweet and poignant. It was how Tolkien intended to finish Lord of the Rings, but Tolkien wrote in Letter 144, “An epilogue … has been so universally condemned that I shall not insert it.”

Following the box-office success of Avatar, several films are being “retro-fitted” for 3-D effects, including Matrix, Star Wars, and Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings.

It just occurred to me that I haven't seen the extended DVDs yet, so I might look into that. Last time I said something about watching them someone said "I'd rather read therm" and I said good idea, but I only got as far as Helms Deep. Curse you, Helms Deep! That chapter has defeated many a reader, I think.

How interesting! Imagine seeing old Shelob crawling all over you

I'm a bit sceptic however. Wasn't Avatar shot with special 3D cameras? Can they really infuse the effects so that they look genuine and not just like some half-hearted 3D effort?

But well, if they succeed, I might consider watching at least one of the films in 3D.

I read it when I bought Sauron Defeated some years ago. Interesting to read, as a matter of special interest - but I think he was wise to take the advice not to insert it
To LotR as it stands, I think it might have been rather an anti-climax.
He might - possibly - have inserted it in the Appendices, though, like the extended story about Aragorn and Arwen. As something more detached from the story proper than even an Epilogue would have been.

I tried to watch RotK over the holiday break last month and managed to get through it. It wasn't any better than the last time I saw it, though.
