Hurricane Rita - worse than Katrina?

Hurricane Rita has now grown to category 5 and is on a course for Texas.

Quote:
Forecasters said Rita could be the most intense hurricane on record ever to hit Texas, and one of the most powerful ever to slam into the U.S. mainland.

All of Galveston, vulnerable sections of Houston and Corpus Christi, and a mostly emptied-out New Orleans were under mandatory evacuation orders, one day after Rita sideswiped the Florida Keys as a far weaker storm and caused minor damage.

What is it with you and hurricanes. Just playin'. I wonder if all these incredible hurricanes have something to do with the planet's climate changes.

what is it with me and hurricanes.. .what???

Did you read what I posted, are you following the news on this storm? It is bigger and stronger than Katrina. It could be devastating.......

Some members thought that a Katrina topic was made too late, so I made this topic at the right time - right when I heard that it had elevated to a category 5 storm and could be one of the most devasting storms to hit the U.S. mainland...

Hopefully it doesn't cause anywhere near the damage that this is predicted to cause!

The coast of Texas could look like the coast of Mississippi.

Well as of now it's got 165 mph winds and it can grow more.....if it takes a turn, we can make N.O. an inland port.!

Its like 5+ now and gaining strength. Katrina picked up 5 story casinos and dropped them 1/2 a mile inland on a major highway and that was with 150 mph winds. So this thing is no freaking joke...

My grandparents live near the coast, and they got out yesterday.

It's so sad--the house they've lived in for almost 40 years now is probably going to be nothing more than a pile of wood, glass, and bricks if Rita doesn't lose power and just smacks into land the way it is now.

Here, you guys, check this out -it's from the National Oceanic & atmospheric Assn., a satellite image of the hurricane - my god, it looks scary. It's on a 24 hr loop so it may take like 10 seconds or so to staret moving once you click on the link, but it really gives one a good idea of the magnitude of this terrifying hurricane...

*stevie ray vaughn* Oh its floodin down in Texas... All of the telephone lines are down...

So they are saying this thing may stall once it hits mainland and drop upwords of 3 feet of water on eastern Texas. And theres more low land areas in the Houston area then there are in New Orleans actually. So this could be really messy... again...

Army engineers say there's little left in the city to lose, however. I rather doubt that that's good news, however :-/.

I hate the idea of what she could do to our oil refineries . Though the people there have drilled to prepare for the hurricane scenario, they have never encountered a storm of this magnitude before.
