Why did sauron want Numenor destroyed?

It seems to me after sauron was taken back to Numenor he had the perfect oppertunity to really take over and rule. here he had the greatest ever nation of men and he was ruleing them. He had the white tree destroyed etc. He also managed to get them to sail on the valar.

He must of known that this would bring about the end of the Numorians but he still proceded with it. Its clear they didnt like the elves much at the time so why didnt he take them as his own and sail on middle earth?

This is just another one of those things that plays in my mind

He actually wanted to kill Ar-Pharazon and destroy their power, he didn't expect the Valar to give up thier guardianship so Eru coulddestroy Numenor and hide Valinor.

i know that. But he had control of them. they were his sevents so to speak. He had control of the gretest nation of men ever and he wanted to end them? why? he had got all that he ever wanted and he threw it all away. It just confuses me.

He didn't think the realm itself would be destroyed. He made a gamble and lost.

H wanted Numenor destroyed so if he "controlled" the world the Numenorians couldn't march against them. They were fierce fighters known as Gods among the men of Middle Earth.

Yes, but what Sween is saying is that they wouldn't have marched against him (or at least, the greater part of them wouldn't) because he was already in control of all their councils. He sent them to fight the valar because he knew the valar would destroy them, and the question is why would he destroy such a valuable tool. It's been a while since I read that passage in the sil, but I seem to recall some statement about Sauron's motive somewhere in there, perhaps a rereading will reveal it to me.

Ar-Pharazon and his was not wholely controled by Sauron, and indeed treated Suaron as subservient to him. There was a sizable likelyhood that would continue as Numenor conquered the world. Suaron could not be confident that he would ever dominate over Ar-Pharazon, the outward form of appearing to be subsevient must have enraged him, and he previousoy humiliated and enraged by ar Pharzon and desired revenge, sooner rather than later. He would have thought it a great idea to have to too most powerfal rival forces for power, Aman and Numenor fighting in a death struggle, with one to be detroyed and the the other mutilated, leaving him in a much better position to control with his much more loyal forces and allies.

But my point is he underestimated the valar-he didn't think Numenor would be destroyed. He wanted to destroy their military might and pick up the pieces. Sauron after all didn't like Ar-Pharazon so he wouldn't mind killing him. It's this mistake which lost him the war against the last alliance.
