Earendil's Star

What exactly was Earendil's Star, the gift given to Frodo from Galadriel? Was it essence light from that star or just a maglite. Someone explain it to me or discuss it.

Your answer is between the covers of the Silmarillion. The Light of Earendil is from the Silmaril that Earendil brought to the Valar. He was seeking their aid to help Elves and Men in their struggle against Morgoth. But because he was mortal and had set foot upon the Undying Lands, he, along with his ship and the Silmaril were placed in the sky as a sign of hope.

Which you would be forgiven for thinking wasn't exactly a charitable thing to do...

Don't read this if you don't want to ruin the Silmarillion!

Before all that, the Silmarils were the three most beautiful jewels ever made.

Feanor (an elf) made them, and captured in them the light of the Trees which illuminated the Undying Lands before the Sun and Moon were made. The Ages of the Trees were the most blissful of all (unless you were unfortunate enough to live in Middle-Earth, in which case they were a nightmare) and it's those times to which the elves are always harking back wistfully.

The Trees were destroyed by Melkor, whom the elves called Morgoth, who was Sauron's master. Well, actually, they were destroyed by Ungoliant, but anyway it was Melkor's idea.

So only the Silmarils preserved the light of the Trees. Naturally, Melkor/Morgoth nicked them, and Feanor and all the Noldor swore to recover them at all costs. These are the costs that the High elves are still paying in LOTR, and it's why they can never be fully happy in Middle-Earth and end up going into the West.

So, to answer your question, it was a +3 maglite.

Why do you say sorry. He put up the grey thing instead of letting me give away the ending. I am actually thankful. Unless you are talking about something else.

Well, the ship wasn't a symbol. The light that shone from the Silmaril that was bound to Earendil's brow was a symbol of hope to the free peoples of Middle-earth, that the evil would be overthrown.

No, he did not know and thought it was possible that the Valar might be wrathful. It worked out though.

Now you must just read the book. I fear to say too much. Ask no more of me. But my heart forbodes era all is ended, that you, Haradrim son of (whoever) will know more of these awesome things than SGH.
