Smaugs origions

Did they mention the name of the Dragon Smaugs father in the book?? if so where???

I haven't seen anything that gives dragon geniologies. Nothing is mentioned of his parentage in the Hobbit, and I doubt that they would have it in a differant book. He had wings, so he is an urokali (Yeah I know I can't spell, but I try) His ansestors would be mentioned in the sil, but I don't think you would get a direct lineage or anything.

All we know from the Silmarillion is that Glaurung the Golden was the first dragon, from which all the others eventually came from. Whether Smaug is third, tenth, or thirtieth generation is not maentioned but makes little difference.

Quite right, we know next to nothing about dragons. We do know there were 3 types.
Cold-dragons - non-fire breathers
Fire-dragons - self explanitory
Fire-drakes, dragons who both breathed fire and could fly

Glaurung the Golden was the first fire-breather. That is why he is called the "father of all dragons", but he is not necessarily the first dragon. From my research I get the feeling cold dragons were around first.

Ancalon the Black was the first Fire Drake. Able to both breathe fire and fly, he started the race of "royal" dragons.

Smaug the Golden is a Fire Drake, a "royal" dragon. This suggests to me that he is a dirrect descendant of Ancalon. Since he is named "the Golden" I would also assume he is a more distant descendant of Glaurung the Golden.

I doubt that any one could get close enough to find out the blood relations of dragons. Somehow a picture springs to my mind: a scholar walks up to Smaug, "hey, Smaug, my old fire worm, who's ya dad anyway?" I think this will probably have ended in a barbeque...

Well, I would thing think that if Glaurung was the first and dubbed "the father of all dragons" (assuming dragon and drake are used interchangably), then all the other types would have come from Glaurung.

However, this may be one of those contradictions that didn't exist in my head before coming to this site... one that is merely a matter of opinion.

I end way too many replies by saying that.
